Parenthood among anthropologists

before and after Esther N. Goody

The subject of this symposium will be to examine the anthropological perspectives of parenthood and clarify the contributions as well as the limits and excesses of the work of Esther Goody. The selected papers and texts can offer insight into the theoretical aspects and/or ethnographic areas in Africa and elsewhere.

  • 2pm - 2.40pm Bernadette Tillard (University of Lille - CLERSE) – Child entrusted by the juvenile court judge to a “trusted third party”. A method of protecting childhood examined through the anthropological work of Esther Goody on fosterage.

  • 2.40pm - 3.20pm Jérôme Courduriès (University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès – LISST-Cas) - Referencing Esther Goody's concepts of parenthood and parenting to analyse the practices of kinship in surrogate motherhood. Values and limits.
