Rajab Suleiman and Le Kithara

Qanun virtuoso Rajab Suleiman, sumptuous singer Saada Nassor and their musical ensemble Le Kithara showcase the taarab, a blend of oriental music and African rhythms emerged at the end of the 19th century among the high society of Tanzania, when its Sultan brought over orchestras and music teachers from Cairo and Istanbul.

Kithara is a duo that has emerged from the Culture Musical Club, the most famous orchestra in Zanzibar, which has dedicated itself to taarab for over half a century. A point of encounter between oriental music and African rhythms born at the end of the 19th century, the taarab spread in the form of amateur clubs with a pronounced social role in which sufism also played its part. Over musical arrangements with a
symphonic orchestration inspired by Egyptian musical comedies, the Kithara offers a taarab with Latin-American or Indian influences, the inheritor of this spirit of social solidarity that favours tales of courtly love, jousts and poetic ornaments.
