Initiation ceremonies in Northern Bougainville, although profoundly affected, are pivotal in contemporary identity. The presentation on November 6th will be done by Nicolas Garnier, curator at the museum, and Laurent Caputo, restorer who has worked on this spectacular artwork.
Large wooden masks decorated with hair locks were central to initiation ceremonies in Bougainville. It seems that only one complete piece has survived. It was brought back by Patrick O'Reilly in 1935.
