This exhibition of more than 80 genuine shields from Irian does not reflect a concern with any archeological perceptions, instead it invites us to share the atmosphere of pieces which have inspired the majority of important artists in the early 20th century since Gauguin, followed by Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Klee and many others. The Asmat carving, especialy their shields, is a form of communication betwwen the living and the dead, between the community of human beings and the complex and pervasive world of the spirits. Despite differences in style all have the same function : to make the spirit tangible and bring the warrior into a world of spirits capavle of protecting him. Each shield has itis own language engraved with geometrical patterns expressing a unique message. The surfaces are paintend with natural pigments adding a strong decorative feeling to the carvings. For several years many western museums have exhibited kind of this art along side with paintings by modern european artist. Presently the museum of Geneva is exhibiting a very important collection of shields titled : "Between Art & Ritaul" which confirms the link between primitive patterns and modern art. At the end of this century there is certainly a lot to write about between so called "Primitivism" and "Modern Art"... it was important that we conclude this century by showing, not only how such forms of art have inspired the evolution of contemporary art,but also to promote awareness that kind of art, at least in his autentic form, is rapidly disappearing.""Exhibition open daily 10.. till 19.00.
