Introduction to French ethnology

Attachment

The French Ethnology Society (SEF) affirms a growing interest in studying contemporary societies. Since 2014, the French Ministry of Culture has placed the SEF in charge of organising days of instruction in ethnology for the general public. These courses are part of a tradition of passing on knowledge, which has been at the centre of the association’s concerns since its foundation.

Based on a pluri-disciplinary subject, each edition seeks to focus on the current state of progress on ethnological knowledge in the different contexts of its production (CNRS, ministry, company, association, university, etc.)  The subject chosen for 2021 is attachment: attachment of individuals to their professions, to the profession of ethnologist, attachment to institutions, to heritage, attachment to objects and our peers, attachment in and for society, and of course the transformations of these attachments in the particular context of the pandemic. These two days are intended for the general public: academics, students, professionals in the cultural domain, staff from museums.
