Evaluating, adapting and transmitting rituals

Religious and secular contexts, multi-disciplinary approaches

This symposium seeks to question the forms of reflexivity used by experts in rituals, that is to say the processes through which ceremonial leaders question, arrange and adjust their ceremonial practices, whether before, after or during ritual performances.

Is there a mechanism, a context or conditions specific to this reflexivity in rituals?

These questions, of great importance to anthropologists studying rituals, are addressed through case studies taken from religious (initiation and divinatory systems, new spiritualities, institutionalised religions, etc.) as well as secular contexts (secular baptisms, hazing, scout ceremonies, etc.) and different fields of social sciences: ethnology, political science, history, educational studies, sociology.
