; This thesis consits onthe ethnological analysis of a recent historical change : the end of the kingdom of Mysore (South-Western India) at India's Independance from British rule (1947), as well as the reorganisation of its old borders following the principle of a territorial definition of the linguistic belongings (ine 1956). This political and institutional transformation is defined by the shift from the principle of 'hierarchical differenciation', characterising the kingly authority, to that of a ' cultural homogeneisation', upholding the construction of a republican and virtually monolingual 'kannadiga' State. Following an effort of comparison and synthesis among several objects of analysis in the contemporary society and in the modern history of Karnataka, a few structural ethnological factors have been identified behind a historical dynamics without ruptures.
