Anatomie des chefs d'œuvre

Ethnographic objects are often characterized by their three-dimensional nature and composed of various materials, often organic, combined in a complex way, with intrinsic weaknesses.

About the Installation

The method of assembly, internal structure and possible content are often unclear. The object’s extreme complexity is not visible from its perhaps less elaborate external appearance, which is regarded as less essential in the eyes of the maker. The challenge of studying and conserving ethnographic collections gave rise to the idea of using medical digitisation tools – scanner and 3D printer – to help us understand and conserve the works.

Based on pieces chosen from the Museum’s collections, the installation explains the contribution of these new tools and presents previously-unsuspected avenues of study in the fields of research, conservation and restoration, as well as in visitor experience.
