Description
Légende de la planche : "Plate XIV. Hemis Kachina generally appears at Niman, the last masked dance of the year. The most unusual part of the mask is the cloud tablet superstructure, from the steps of which trimmed turkey feathers and long grasses project. Phallic symbols are painted on the front with a rainbow design in the center. The top is surmounted by two eagle tail feathers tipped with breath feathers. A cluster of eagle feathers is tied to the black of the mask and downy feathers float from many parts. The collar of the mask is made of spruce, and spruce is also inserted under the belt, in the arm bands and carried in the left hand. Spruce must be used by Kachinas performing the Niman and Powamu ceremonies, although other dancers may, if they wish, substitute cedar or juniperwhich is more easily procured. Hemis Kachina's body is painted black and a paho (prayer stick) is tied to his right wrist".
