Résumé

Full film record depicting life in Melemchi, a Sherpa village at the head of the Helembu Valley, Nepal. Created in the winter of 1989, the project was conceived to document the cultural ecology of Melemchi with a focus on the interactions between herd management, cyclical Sherpa wage labor migration to India, and cultural factors affecting family reproduction. Documentation includes: preparations for and celebration of Losar (Tibetan New Year); Yung (Buddhist ceremony) at which texts are read; composting and preparation of fields involving village labor exchange; various kinds of work associated with transhumant zomo herds including collection of fodder, milking, and cheese making; a village meeting with panchayat representatives; a gapte kyungen (traditional Sherpa marriage) involving symbolic bride capture followed by the wedding celebration; housebuilding and repair; the distilling of chang (Sherpa beer) to make rakshi (liquor); and woman weaving material for a Sherpa jacket. Also included are interviews with Melemchi men and women with different social experiences and generational backgrounds. Footage complements [Melemchi Village, Nepal, 1986].
