Résumé
The DVD comprises five films of the Encyclopaedia Cinematographica: E 1253 Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) - Tying a Turban; E 1270; Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) - Batiking a Sling to Carry Children; E 1272 Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) - Preparation of Hemp Yarn for Weaving; E 1273 Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) - Preparation of the Warp for Hemp Weaving and E 1274 Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) - Hemp Weaving on a Treadle Loom. ; Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) : Tying a Turban : The turban-cloth is rolled out and measured out by spreading the arms so that both embroidered ends lie on one another when it is bound. The turban is then wound in the traditional manner. ; Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) : Batiking a Sling to Carry Children : A lattice pattern is pressed into the undyed cotton cloth, and then the negative of a pattern is drawn in wax with the batik pen. The cloth is then dyed blue in indigo, and the wax is finally melted out by boiling. ; Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) : Preparation of Hemp Yarn for Weaving : Hemp fibres are intertwined with the fingers and tied so as to produce long theads. Finally, four threads are twisted by means of a spinning device. ; Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) : Preparation of the Warp for Hemp Weaving : With a rope ten loops are made on a bamboo frame. Ten hemp threads are then drawn through these loops. Five short wooden pins are driven into the ground, and around these the warp threads are wound. The warp is then threaded through the reed. The loops for the heddle rod are made with threads of their own. The finished warp is wound on the warp beam and carried to the loom. ; Miao (Thailand, Tak Province) : Hemp Weaving on a Treadle Loom : On a winder, the weaver spools the yarn on to a bobbin, which, turnable about a knockout spindle, is fixed in the shuttle. She fixes the warp beam in the frame of the loom, makes the treadle mechanism ready for use, puts on the weaver''s girth, puts the separating roll into position, checks the shed-formation, and then begins weaving.
