Regarding the Other

Photographs from the 19th century

Content

One of the high points of the spectacular exhibition called A view of the Other was a collection of 120 photographs, mostly unpublished, from the main ethnographic collections in France and, notably, from the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac's collection of photographs.

This collection of portraits and landscapes mostly dating from the 19th century shows how Westerners’ views of the ‘Other’ were modified through the taking of ethnographic photographs. Today, these documents are considered to be true works of art.

The album is structured so as to give the images pride of place. They are organised according to the exhibition's main sections: (individuals, manufacturing reality, capturing space…) This is followed by the ‘commentaries’, expressed via articles by three experts who take turns at engaging with the photographs' status and historical context.

The album is the first in a series of publications that will be dedicated to the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac’s photographic collections and presents an opportunity to publish hitherto unknown photographs from these new stocks, as well as from other French collections.
