Arts of the Benue Valley

Content

Following in the footsteps of the first explorers as they traced the course of the Benué River, this catalogue and exhibition places almost 150 objects – sculptures and masks made primarily of wood, ceramic and metal – within their geographical and historical context. By focusing on the formal relationships between the objects, going beyond the sometimes imprecise or reductive ethnic identities, the exhibition aims to present a fairer and dynamic illustration of the arts of this region, which are rarely shown to the public.
