In Burkina Faso, mask societies are genuine institutions, guarantors of the basic values that govern the everyday life of men and women belonging to the same family. The mask is not just a piece of wood, nor the dancer behind it, but the incarnation of a spirit, a force of nature. Mask ceremonies are spectacular in the extreme. with the entire village population taking part, accompanied by drum-beating griots. This Claude Lévi-Strauss Theatre presentation is a social event emblematic of 'immaterial patrimonies'.
