masks and drums of Africa
from Friday 7 to Sunday 16 June 2013
On two weekends in June, discover some of the still-living traditions relating to African dances with masks and drums. In the context of the Festival de l’Imaginaire, the Maison des Cultures du Monde presents a dance of Makishi masks, a form existing in the traditions of different populations around the River Zambezi, and a dance of the masks of the famous Dogon people from Mali. The musée du quai Branly's special guests will be the Master Drummers of Burundi.
Custodians of traditions and integrated into and participating in societies in transition, the artists presented here are the guardians of rituals and ceremonies and also travellers between visible and invisible worlds, unique geographies and cosmogonies; crossing the distance between initiates and spectators.
