latin america in pictures and for pictures

Seminar by the REIA-LESC supported by the Institute of the Americas.

Patrick Deshayes, professor at the University of Lumière Lyon 2. REIA-LESC – Institute of the Americas

Helios Figuerola Pujol, REIA-LESC

This seminar offers reflection on Latin America through the presentation and analysis of documentary films.

Serge Gruzinski has shown how images have been used by the colonial world to propagate western culture and to try to turn the conquered worlds of the Americas into a uniform entity. Contemporary documentary cinema shows us a Latin America through reconstructing and re-appropriating images and identities. Based on the film screenings and by inviting the writer(s) and/or director(s), we continue this reflection.

In this approach we will, of course, examine the making of the film, but also the reconstruction of the Latin America of today through its images: those it has undergone, those it conveys and also those it is re-appropriating in order to reconstruct itself.

Fridays from 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm
