Diaspora cinema selection
From 15th to 25th of November 2007

As a counterpoint to the Diaspora exhibition, which will take place between October 2007 and January 2008 in the Garden Gallery, a season of films, selected by Thierry Jousse, endeavours to evoke the many cinematographic forms of the black diaspora, from Africa to the USA via Brazil, Haiti, the West Indies and even Metropolitan France
Through this season, the forms, characters and questions born of this black diaspora will be discussed and revealed: from slavery to the Black Panthers, from immigration to cultural diversity, from colonialism to the emancipation of Africa, from negritude to apartheid, from the despoiled memory to the liberation movements, from the cultural melting pot to asserting identities, without forgetting the musical genres like American soul music, Brazilian samba, Cameroonian bikutsi, etc.
But this schedule will also be the occasion to mix classics and rarities, short and feature-length films, fiction and documentaries, new cinemas and traditional genres.
It is a way of plotting the traces of this diaspora on the cinematic map; a diaspora which, over the years, has definitively changed the face of an art that is particularly apt to deal with the most surprising and explosive of metamorphoses.
