Description
Légende de la planche : "Plate XXV. Qa'ö Kachina (corn Kachina) dances with such a lively tempo that generally only boys or young men take this part. Like the Poli dancers, but unlike most Kachinas, they doo not sing, but are accompanied by a drummer and masked chorus, generally of Koyemsi (mud heads). Both the dance and the songs have a certain gaiety and charm unusual to Kachinas. Qa'ö masks are decorated in a variety of geometric pattern. The top is covered with colored yarn from which four large turkey feathers project and between which are draped colored ribbons. The body is painted with blue circles, and red and green skeins of yarn are tied about the wrists and legs. Hopi belt, breech cloth, socks, garters, bells and moccasins complete the costume".
Usage
