The Rain

At the Carré Plantagenêt - Musée d'Archéologie et d'Histoire de la Ville du Mans

A vital phenomenon for the Earth and its inhabitants, rain, through its absence or excess, is both benficial and catastrophic. The hopes and fears of societies associated with rain are expressed through acts and objects.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Deified, rain occupies a prominent position in cosmogony, allowing for strategies to ensure the balance of the universe. A source of fertility, it is often associated with human fecundity. Rain is depicted in many forms: realistically, figuratively, abstractly, through symbolic or metaphoric representations.

This exhibition brings together some 80 iconographic pieces and documents taken from the collections of the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac. It invites the visitor to explore the different aspects of rain through pieces selected for their evocative power or their strong emotional or aesthetic charge. The selection of works from Africa, Asia, Oceania and America lead visitors through an understanding of a naturel phenomenon to human beings' incorporation of this into their conception of the universe. The trivial and the spiritual, the profane and the religious are thus united and confronted in a contrast that stands almost as a metaphor of life itself.
