The Gradhiva journal
anthropology and arts history
The musée du quai Branly took over publication of the review Gradhiva in the first half of 2005.
Founded in 1986 by Michel Leiris and Jean Jamin, and published by Editions Jean-Michel Place, the review was originally the organ of expression of the Groupe de Recherches et d'Analyses sur l'Histoire et les Variations de l'Anthropologie, a research team from the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and the ethnological history section of the Musée de l'Homme. Its programme was made explicit in its subtitle, ‘review of anthropological history and archives’.
With the launch of the new series, the subtitle was changed to ‘review of anthropology and museology’, although no changes have been made either in its scientific vocation or in its editorial policy. The review remains a forum for discussion of the history of and current developments in anthropology, based on original studies and publication of archives and eyewitness accounts.
Gradhiva also places importance upon the study of real or symbolic objects and of museological and anthropological problematics. It is open to a wide range of disciplines, including ethnology, aesthetics, history, sociology, literature, and music, and seeks to develop interaction between text and image through its innovative and original iconography.
