Usage – ways of dressing and others
After exploring the different factors that are involved in decorative development, some examples allow the evocation of the role and place that fabrics play in the social life, as marks of identity, such as elements of profane or religious rituals or as vectors of artistic expression.
The majority of decorated fabrics that enter into social rituals, or have a symbolic function with their patterns or colours, are mainly clothing but they can also have other profane or ceremonial uses.

Woman’s belt, kourzia Morocco, Rif, Ouezzane Region, Jbala, beginning of 20th century Handspun yarn, Z-twist, strong Z-twist cotton Donation by Paul Rodier 71.1962.88.128
Unlike other Berber regions, the fabric and dyeing of Jbala women’s belts was the work of craftsmen. Those from El Jaia were particularly reknowned and their belts widely sought after. Barré cloth (2-ply Rep effect) and a lozenge twill base (2 / 2). Two kinds of reserve are involved : one by knot tying in order to form circles and the other by tying on some of the unmade (non-organisé) pleats at the ends. The dye is made from natural colouring agents and is prepared in two baths. Wefts of blue and white cotton that barré the fabric are not coloured during dyeing and constitute an element of design which comes in addition to colour and texture. 444x37 cm
