the musée du quai Branly, a museum of first arts?
MEMO FOR PARENTS
A museum is a place where works are presented, both to show them to visitors and to protect them (from the passage of time, destruction and the disappearance of cultures). In the Museum, these objects are cared for (by conservators) and studied (by curators). They are showcased so that all the world can come to admire and understand them.
At the musée du quai Branly, non-European works, i.e. those from Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas are exhibited. The expression "First arts" or "primitive arts " does not distinguish between these different cultures, as if these objects were manufactured by populations from the beginning of humanity that had not evolved until today. In reality, even if some of these objects are very old, others are extremely recent. We find can different types of objects in the Museum: textiles, musical instruments, masks, statues, jewelry, etc. When we look at these objects, we see them with our western eyes and we may find them beautiful or bizarre, frightening or funny. They were simply created and conceived of by populations whose traditions and cultures are different to ours... discover these works as a family!
